First Extended Weekend - Dublin, Ireland, Feb. 12-15

Saturday- I survived my first night in the hostel! I slept with everything important and had it right next to my head. It was all still there in the morning. phew. Sleeping in the hostel was so nice because it was so warm, unlike in the castle! We were up and at breakfast around 7:30 am. I was surprised at they provided for breakfast. We got to have a cup of orange juice, two pieces of toast, a bowl of cereal, and either tea or coffee. After breakfast we headed to the main street to find the three story souvenir shop. We found out that the same company owns all of the souvenir shops in Dublin and the one across the O'Connell Bridge was the largest one. I had decided to check out the prices of gifts then see how much they are at the real stores. From there we went to the Trinity College. It is the oldest university in Ireland. The buildings were very beautiful and old. We also saw their library where the book of Kells is kept. For lunch we decided to go to McDonalds. We wanted something cheaper and fast. McDonalds had "twisty" fries, which was very interesting because those aren't their fries. After lunch we took a "123" bus to the Guinness Storehouse. Really it was only like a two minute bus ride and wasn't worth our 1.50 euros. There are quite a few signs directing you in to the storehouse entrance. On the street in front of the entrance there were quite a few horse drawn carriages. The girls were like in awe. It just made me laugh because I see them all the time. It cost 11 euros to get in, but was so worth it. On the first level is where the store was and where the tour starts. There was a man that gave us a 5 minute intro. Then the tour was self guided. I thought it was amazing: the seven levels, hands-on barley, tv screens, water fall, tasting area, pour your own pint, advertising area, and of course on the seventh level was the Gravity Bar. This is where you could get your free pint. I ended up getting orange soda because there was no way I could choke down Guinness again. The bar was packed because that day in rugby Ireland played France and France is really good. People are very in to rugby. Now after Guinness we decided to walk back through to the other sights because they really weren't that far away. We were going to the Christ Church Cathedral and the Dublin Castle. Well..... we ended up walking by the cathedral probably five times without knowing it. With just a couple wrong turns we found the Castle. Just because we found it doesn't mean we got in. The tours were all filled for the day so back to the souvenir shop we went. When all the shopping for the day was done, we went back to the hostel. For supper we wanted fish-n-chips and found a cafe close by called the Midnight Express that had some. It was delicious. All they put on it is vinegar and salt. I agree with them, it's good that way. It just so happened that I was on facebook and saw that some other kids from the castle were staying in Dublin for the night. We met up with them and headed to the pub for a drink. It was a good way to end the night.
